keith haring: Public illumination

First appearing in 1979, Public Illumination was a pint-size satirical periodical which featured witty articles, observations and illustrations by some of the Art World’s most notable personalities. The only rule was that each entry had to be submitted pseudonymously. As such, few know the real identity of all contributors.

Nevertheless, some pseudonyms were more obvious than others. For the March 1981 issue, the mysterious “Kip Herring” produced a number of striking illustrations of figures in various positions and poses. With little detective work, one could discover that the artist was in fact Keith Haring. Likely one of the very first illustrations of his iconic work, this issue is the most desirable and rare of the entire 40+ year run of the magazine.
